Storm Eowyn 24th January 2024

The latest winter storm, Storm Eowyn is due to hit the Isle of Man on Friday 24th January.

Parts of the Island are still getting over the effects of Storm Darragh in December, with Tower receiving over 400 associated claims following this event.

With winds expected to potentially reach 90MPH, personal safety is of course paramount, below are some tips to ensure you and your property remain safe during the storm.

Preparation prior to the storm

  • Secure loose objects in the open such as childrens toys, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown around and cause damage to them or property/person.
  • Close and securely fasten doors and windows, particularly those on the windward side of the house, and especially large doors such as those on garages
  • Park vehicles in a garage, if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, trees, walls and fences.

During the storm

  • Stay indoors as much as possible
  • If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees, especially if they look in poor condition or show signs of damage from the storm
  • Keep away from the sheltered side of boundary walls and fences - if these structures fail, they will collapse on this side, especially those in poor condition
  • Do not go outside to repair damage while the storm is in progress
  • If possible, enter and leave your house through doors in the sheltered side, closing them behind you
  • Take care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads, delay your journey or find alternative routes if possible
  • Slow down and be aware of side winds, particular care should be taken if you are towing or are a high sided vehicle
  • Do not drive unless your journey is really necessary, if you must travel, be prepared for a longer journey and give yourself more time to reach your destination safely

After the storm

  • Be careful not to touch any electrical/telephone cables that have been blown down or are still hanging
  • Take care and try not walk too close to walls, buildings and trees as they could have been weakened or damaged
  • Make sure that any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs

If you are unlucky to suffer damage to your property, there are a number of steps to consider.

  • Only if safe to do so and within your ability, make safe any damaged or lose items. Do what you can to mitigate any further loss
  • If you need to make any emergency repairs, do so, making sure you take pictures of the damage and keep invoices and receipts for any materials or labour you have paid for.
  • If restorative work needs to be carried out to make good the damage, please engage your chosen contractor to provide a cause of the damage, and an itemised estimate for the works.
  • If you do not have a regular contractor a good place to look is ConstructionIOM.im
  • Contact your broker/insurer at your earliest opportunity to register a claim and they will provide guidance and assistance to help you through the process.

 Most importantly, please stay safe.
